Location & How to Get There
Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve is located in Muskoka Lakes Township, about 2 hours and 15 minutes north of Toronto. It’s part of the Ontario Crown Land and was designated the world’s first permanent dark sky preserve in 1999.

- Parking: Free parking is available near the main trailhead.
- Cell signal: Spotty or nonexistent — download offline maps in advance.
Directions from Toronto:
- Take Hwy 400 North to Hwy 11.
- Exit at Gravenhurst and follow Muskoka Road 169 to Torrance.
- Turn onto Southwood Road and drive to the trailhead.
Sky Orientation & What You’ll See
One of the best features of Torrance Barrens is its 360° unobstructed horizon, perfect for:
- Milky Way photography (faces southeast to southwest from March to October).
- Aurora Borealis (occasional sightings to the north, especially during geomagnetic storms).
- Meteor showers like Perseids (mid-August), Geminids (December), and Quadrantids (January).
- Deep-sky objects like Andromeda, Orion Nebula, Pleiades, and summer globular clusters.
- Excellent foreground elements for wide-angle nightscapes: exposed bedrock, lone trees, and reflective puddles after rain.
